Small public space, formerly St Mary's Park, with a Bengali martyrs monument and old tombstones.
The circumstances of how the name was changed from St Mary’s Park to Aftab Ali Park in 1998 is something which is not well noted on local attractions, however is integral to the local community. Aftab Ali was a Bangladeshi textile worker who was the victim of one of many racist attacks that were occurring at the time he lived in Whitechapel. But it seemed that his murder on the 4th May 1978 was the final straw for the local community. They took to the streets in protest, carrying his coffin all the way to 10 Downing Street, and over time managed to make a positive change in reducing racism in the East End.
