Once one of England’s most thriving ports, now landlocked, Winchelsea was planned as a medieval new town, set on a hill and constructed in a chequer pattern with hidden vaults beneath. Today there’s a sense of calm, order and quietness preserved in its streets and buildings, and of intrigue when touring its labyrinth of underground cellars.

Crammed with paintings, textiles, furniture and books the house feels like the last owner Betty Hussey has just popped out to the shops. The house was built in 1837 by Edward Hussey III from the sandstone quarried from the grounds of the Old Castle. It is positioned to overlook both the castle and estate, with the garden also designed and created at the same time. This meant that all the three elements: house, garden and estate would work as one in creating a perfect picturesque country home. Scotney Castle’s garden is like a landscape painting with drama and romance. From a stunning vista of the old castle glimpsed through a swathe of rhododendrons and azaleas in spring to colourful reflections in the moat throughout autumn.

Spanning more than 700 years, the history of Hever Castle is rich and varied. The original medieval defensive castle, with its gatehouse and walled bailey, was built in 1270. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was the home of one of the most powerful families in the country, the Boleyns, who added the Tudor dwelling within the walls. The Castle was to become the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII’s second wife, who became Queen of England for just 1,000 days. It was Henry’s love for Anne and her insistence that she became his wife rather than his mistress that led to the King renouncing Catholicism and creating the Church of England. Hever later passed into the ownership of another of Henry VIII’s wives, Anne of Cleves, and from 1557 onwards it was owned by a number of families including the Waldegraves, the Humphreys and the Meade Waldos. Gradually it fell into decline before William Waldorf Astor invested time, money and imagination in restoring the Castle. He commissioned the ’Tudor Village’, now called the ‘Astor Wing’ and the construction of the magnificent gardens and lake. At Hever, his wealth and vision enabled him to create a lavish family home that also indulged his passion for history. The beautiful gardens at Hever Castle were laid out between 1904 and 1908 by Joseph Cheal and Son, turning marshland into the spectacular gardens you see today, which are a pleasure to visit at any time of the year.

At Pashley you will discover 11 acres of beautiful borders and vistas – the culmination of a lifetime of passion for gardening, an appetite for beauty and an admiration of the tradition of the English Country garden. These award winning gardens, on the border of Sussex and Kent, are family owned and maintained – visitors often express delight at the attention to detail displayed throughout and the intimate, peaceful atmosphere. All the ingredients of the English Country Garden are present – sweeping herbaceous borders, ha-ha, well maintained lawns, box hedges, espaliered rose walk, historic walled garden, inspiring kitchen garden, venerable trees and the Grade I listed house as a backdrop. The gardens are a haven for wildlife – bees, butterflies and small birds as well as moor hens, ducks and a black swan. Then, of course, the plants! Borders overflowing with perennials and annuals – the look changing through the seasons, but always abundantly filled, and each garden ‘room’ planted in a different colour theme. Pashley is also renowned for fantastic displays of tulips, roses and dahlias. Our annual Tulip Festival features 35,000 tulips. During Special Rose Week over a hundred varieties of rose swathe the walls, climb obelisks and bloom in flower beds. Then in late summer our Dahlia Days event transforms the gardens once more with bountiful, brightly coloured dahlias in every border and pot. Add to all this a Café and Terrace with excellent garden views, serving delicious homemade lunches, scones and cakes; Sculpture and Art Exhibitions; a Gift Shop with Plant Sales; and a friendly, knowledgeable team waiting to welcome you, and the recipe for a wonderful day out is complete.

Tucked away in the weald of Kent is a quintessentially English home. But the Tudor beams and rambling roses disguise a deeper truth: Smallhythe Place was also a vibrant, radical place filled with creative spirits and pioneering women. Edy Craig followed her mother into the theatre, working most often as a producer and costume designer. She was also a committed suffrage feminist in the years before the First World War, when Smallhythe became a haven for many other activists. Edy founded and managed the Pioneer Players for almost fifteen years from 1911. It was a theatre society that staged many innovative plays in London and produced some 150 plays for the suffrage movement.

For a great day out with younger children. Park at the Bodiam station, walk down to the Bodiam Boating station and catch the river cruise to Bodiam Castle - where you can enjoy some of the activities they hold in the holidays, picnic, enjoy the castle or go to the National Trust cafe. Then catch the KES railway back to your car. We would advise that you book the river cruise beforehand at Bodiam Boating Station and check to see what is on at Bodiam castle before you plan your day. The railway you see today at 10½ miles in length is a fine example of one of England’s light railways and originally part of a larger system which operated between Headcorn and Robertsbridge. The K&ESR was the very first ‘light railway’ to be constructed: light railways are equipped with full size trains, but have steep gradients and operate at low speed. Passenger trains ran from 1900 until 1954 but an ambitious scheme to reopen the railway from Tenterden was proposed, although it was not until 1974 that the first trains were able to run on a short section of line. The registered charity that now owns and operates the line was able to finally restore services to Bodiam in time for the centenary of the line in 2000: today the K&ESR welcomes around 90,000 people each year.e’ve a unique collection of trains, some of which are approaching 150 years old – but still going strong! The journey time between Tenterden and Bodiam is around 50 minutes each way and from 22nd June our great value Freedom Tickets allow you to hop on, hop off any of the trains operating on the day of your visit. compartment carriage Many of our trains include carriages with old-fashioned family compartments – perfect if you prefer your own personal space. The Ticket Inspector will be pleased to advise availability on your train – there’s an £8 supplement for up to 8 people to occupy a compartment.

Tibbs Farm is the next door farm to The Hammonds and so a short walk. A family farm since 1956. Situated in the picturesque Tillingham Valley, just outside Rye, lies a fantastically traditional mixed farm. Growing fruit and hops and farming native Romney sheep, not much has changed over the years. Tibbs Farm has been running a PYO fruit farm since the 1970's and now boast one of the largest range of PYO fruit collections in the South East. From strawberries and raspberries to the more unusual Tummelberry and six varieties of Gooseberry; it's all about growing. Tibbs has now opened a cafe and farm shop after several years of planning. Sitting atop the southern ridge of the Tillingham Valley and with views over traditional hop gardens and beyond to Rye we hope you'll enjoy visiting and sharing in our little corner of beautiful Sussex.

The Plough is a walk away through the fields. The Plough is an English country pub with stunning views from the garden over the Brede Valley, with the sea as a backdrop. Situated on the Kent and East Sussex border and less than two miles from the medieval town of Rye, they enjoy a fantastic larder of local produce – from the freshest of fish landed in Rye and Hastings every day, to the wonderful delights from the Romney Marsh such as lamb and beef, as well as the best of seasonal vegetables. With all this on the doorstep they offer a good choice of local beers, ciders, wines and freshly prepared food. I do recommend booking!

Hastings Seafront. With an extensive beer menu to – 15 taps plus a dedicated takeaway fridge. Oysters and Beer? Brewing Brothers pizzas have become a very popular staple, but now the Brothers are branching out. The new venue will boast an oyster bar providing us with classic oyster platters plus delicious local fish and charcuterie boards. Beer and oysters sound like a somewhat bizarre combination to those of us who haven’t sampled the pairing before, but, perhaps surprisingly, it is a combination that has been tried and tested and is loved by many. Certain beers will complement the different types of oysters in the way different wines match with different foods. For example, malty and hoppy beers will enhance savoury notes in the oyster whereas lager has been noted to highlight delicious brininess. But don’t take my word for it, you’ll have to try it yourself to find your favourite combo.
