It is located between the mainland and the barrier islands Cayo Costa, Captiva, and Sanibel. The water is shallow, with hundreds of small mangrove islands and a few beach areas. Nearly all water and mangrove surrounding Pine Island is protected. To the east is Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve. To the west is Pine Island Sound Aquatic Preserve. Kayak fishing is very popular!

"Take a Hike" at Pinewood Trails on Pine Island. Over 40 acres of Pine flatwoods make up this Lee County Park that opened back in 2016. It has two trail loops, one paved and the other natural ground cover. You'll find slash pines (how Pine Island got its name), gopher tortoises, osprey, palmettos, mangrove, a pavilion, water fountain, and salt marsh. Open dawn to dusk and pet friendly.
