Moody’s Diner is a Maine coast institution and authentic classic. Those who have been to Moody's Diner know that Moody's is not a "quaint-on-purpose" tourist attraction. It is a diner on US Route 1 in Waldoboro, Maine, plain and simple. It has survived, prospered, and grown these 80-plus years because of good food, reasonable prices, and quick, pleasant service. There are people who eat at Moody's every day, and those who come in every time they travel to Maine. Easy and casual, Moody’s has counter front seating up front and private booth seating throughout the rest of the restaurant. Nothing fancy, just good diner food. Moody’s has a classic breakfast, lunch and dinner diner menu highlighted with award winning blueberry muffins, “whoopie pies,” rhubarb pie and other sundries. Monday to Sunday, 7:00 am to 8:00pm 1885 Atlantic Highway (Route One), Waldoboro, ME 04572 (207) 832-7785 www.moodysdiner.com

Sara Jenkins’ Mediterranean take, right here in Mid-coast Maine. And with a wicked view over Rockport Harbor to boot. If you are lucky, Chip will be at the bar whipping up one of his famous cocktails made with house infused booze. Take it to go, curbside, if you prefer. Comfort food to go in Tenants Harbor. This has been our go-to take out during COVID. Their chicken sandwiches (made on Sunday only) sell out fast, because it might be the best chicken sandwich you’ve had in your life. If there is a more decadent, seasonal or hyper-local treat than a Ruckus Donut, we haven't found it! A relatively new addition to the Rockland food scene, Ruckus Donuts is quickly becoming a classic. With traditional flavors and inventive offerings (such as the Maple Bacon with half bacon, half blueberries on a maple glaze. It's a scrumptious take on a plate of blueberry pancakes with maple syrup & a side of bacon - in honor of Rockland's annual blues festival!). We particularly like getting a donut and walking out the mile-long breaker to the Rockland Lighthouse!

Sightseeing

Reservations are recommended to secure your passage for a 1/2-day, full day, or overnight adventure on Monhegan Island. Monhegan is home to about 55 year round residents but swells to over 300 during the summer. This quaint and quintessential Maine island is home to a thriving artist community with galleries around town, a nice coffee shop, the Outsiders Inn (the only hotel on the island overlooking Monhegan Bay), a general store, and a light house. There are also beautiful walking trails through the forest leading to towering open ocean cliffs with vistas of the expansive ocean (and one very special “fairy woods” hike for the littles!). Roam around the cliffs, find your own special look out, have a picnic, or simply walk around the small town browsing the small shops and galleries. This is one of the best 1/2-day, full day or overnight trips in the area. There is parking available in Port Clyde, a general store, ice cream shop, and kayaking outfitters. For those “flat landers” among us, don’t forget to take Dramamine prior to boarding the ferry. Note: Monhegan Boat Line also offers sunset, puffin watching and lighthouse cruises. Hours of Operation: seasonal, May 1st to October 31st, subject to change 880 Port Clyde Road Port Clyde, ME 04855 207-372-8848

A pleasant 30-minute drive north on scenic Route 1, Camden is the home of a picturesque Maine harbor, a premier shopping area, local hiking, tall ship sunset cruises, ice cream shops and a thriving local restaurant scene. There is something for everyone: whether you are looking to actively hike and explore Camden Hills State Park, relax on a sailboat as it glides over the cool ocean waves in Penobscot Bay, or explore the unique local shops, Camden has it all. Boat Tours Located right on Penobscot Bay, Camden is a sailor's dream. Camden Harbor is home to numerous schooners and tall ships that offer daily sailing tours and excursions or visitors may choose to charter their own ships. Penobscot Bay has been said to be one of the best and most scenic sailing areas in the state of Maine. Camden remains a working harbor, with lobstering and fishing boats travelling in and out of the Bay each day to catch fresh seafood and lobster. A ride around the harbor will pass island ferries, mega-yachts, powerboats, fishing boats, Maine windjammers and more! Downtown Downtown Camden is delight of upscale shops, antique shops, general stores, seafood eateries and cafes, plus the beautiful waterfront Camden Public Library which is surrounded by a lovely park for picnicking. Camden Hills State Park Camden Hill State Park encompasses 5,700 acres, including over 30 miles of hiking and walking trails. Hills State Park is great for families with children because the hiking trails are not very strenuous or long and usually have very moderate inclines. If you don't feel like hiking, drive the Auto Road up Mt. Battie for panoramic views of the Bay and nearby islands. Maiden's Cliff is one of the more popular hiking trails, an 800-foot rock cliff that provides spectacular views of Lake Megunticook and the Maine countryside. Beaches Beach goers will love Barret's Cove, a freshwater beach on Megunticook Lake. This beach is a quiet and relaxing escape from a busy Camden in the summer months. It is often not crowded, and the lake water remains relatively warm during prime season. The beach is open to the public with designated swimming areas, public restrooms and showers. There is also a grassy picnic area with tables and outdoor grills and a playground for the kids to enjoy. Laite Beach is small but scenic, overlooking beautiful views of Camden Harbor just a short distance from downtown. Laite Beach is part of a grassy park that slopes down to a pebble beach along the water, perfect for searching for shells, sea glass and other ocean treasures. The park has swings, picnic tables, grills and restroom facilities. There is a swimming platform offshore for those brave enough to swim in the chilly harbor waters. Lighthouses It is worth a day trip to visit one of Camden's outlying islands, Isleboro, Vinalhaven, North Haven, Isle Au Haut or the many other smaller islands in the area, accessible by boat or ferry out of Camden Harbor. Many of these islands are home to great hiking and biking trails, quaint seaside villages and picturesque Maine lighthouses. Winter Activities There are plenty of things to do in Camden during the winter as the town becomes a hot spot for winter sports. The Camden Snow Bowl is a community owned ski area on Ragged Mountain and the only Eastern ski area with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Skiers and snowboarders alike will enjoy this picturesque ski mountain in Camden. In February, Camden Snow Bowl is home to the North American Toboggan Championships. Ice-skating and cross-country are also popular winter activities that many Camden visitors enjoy.

If there were a family playground on the water in Maine, Boothbay Harbor would be it. More popular with tourists than Camden or Rockland, it is a popular day trip. Shops, bar and grilles, restaurants and bistros, sunset sailing cruises, artist studios, souvenirs, ice cream/saltwater taffy/fudge, t-shirt shops, and outdoor concerts, all with the historic Boothbay Harbor waterfront as a backdrop.

Speaking of cheese, right down the road from Three Sisters Farm is one of the best local cheesemakers we have come across! Laskin's Gorges Cheese in Waldoboro, Maine is an environmentally focused farm where cows rotationally graze in fields and forests - and you can taste the difference in their cheese. Our favorite is the award-winning Rockweed! You can buy it right at the farm - with an honor cash box if Allison's not home. East Forty Farm also offers delicious monthly farm suppers through the summer (book early!) and their summerhouse can be booked for fondue parties and cheese tastings.

Things to do during the Winter

Camden Snow Bowl is our local ski spot. It's not the biggest mountain, but it's got a great old-school community feel and is never really crowded. It’s just about a perfect sized mountain for kids learning to ski, and you can see the ocean from the top of the mountain, which is kind of awesome! (They also run the ski lift in the fall for some awesome foliage viewing if you’re staying with us then! ) Another really fun thing, in addition to the skiing/snowboarding/tubing, is the Toboggan Shoot. It's the country's only remaining original, gravity-operated 400-foot-long wooden toboggan chute! The old-fashioned run shoots you out over the pond at around 40 miles per hour! It's open on weekends and you can rent a toboggan there (or bring your own if you happen to have one lying around). ;) There's a great short doc L.L. Bean did on a local team entered in the National Taboggan Championships (held at the Snow Bowl) if you need more convincing. I can't link to it here, but if you search for it, you'll see what I mean!
