Activities

The flat is just over 5 minutes from Victoria park which is great for a stroll or a run (one full lap of the park is just under 5 km). There’s a nice café called the Pavilion at the park, which serves good coffee, pastries and an amazing Sri Lankan breakfast.

If you walk down the greenway you will find the Olympic Park. It’s a nice place for a run or a stroll. There are really nice canals along the different stadiums/arenas built for the 2012 Olympics. For about £5 you can go swim to the Olympic pool, which is really cool. There are also multiple gyms (in the Olympic pool and in the Copper Box). They have cheaper memberships available for students.

A mandatory walk around the area is down the River Lea Navigation path. It’s the path you can see from the flat. If you walk north west, you will reach the Hackney Marshes which is another lovely park. If you are keen to do long runs, the Hackney Marshes is the place to go. There’s several restaurants and bars down the river path (more information on this below).

During the summer you can rent canoes to explore the river Lea navigation and local canals which is a lit of fun. Canoes can be rented at Hackney wick where the Hertford union canal meets the river Lea (10 min walk from the flat) or Limehouse basin. For an additional fee you can rent from one place and return to the other so you get to see more of the canals. Customers get a discount from the river facing hatch of the floating bar next to the canoe rental place in Hackney wick. On sunny days booking is essential so check out the moo canoe website.

Food scene

The Crate Brewery- nice brewery by the canal that also sells delicious pizzas. Very well known around the area so gets really busy, particularly over weekends. Natura- really good Italian restaurant. It’s run by Italians so all food is very authentic. The Natura pizza is delicious. They will try to get you to pay in cash (the card machine does work, but they prefer a less traceable income!). The Merchants Tap- really good beer selection and decent food. From the Ashes- take away barbecue. We developed a serious addiction to this place- it is seriously good. Must visit (if you are a meat lover). Grow – bar and music venue that has a food concession. An ethical and sustainable business that is well worth the visit. Often has live music. Two More Years- this place recently reopened with a different name and slightly different concept. The location is great, the beers as well and the food seems to have potential but we left shortly after it opened. Barge East- this place has a bar and a restaurant. The restaurant is located in the barge which is pretty cool. Their food is very nice, pricey but good value. The restaurant is a really good option if you are looking to have a special night out. The bar is a nice spot for a drink and they do flat breads on the weekends which are worth a try. Cornerstone- very fancy seafood restaurant. A good place to go if you are celebrating something special. These are our favourites but there are lots of places in the area and new places opening all the time (for example the pub the Lord Napier Star at Hackney Wick was just reopened after many years left abandoned) so by no means an exhaustive list as we have not tried everywhere.

The Dusty Knuckle- at Dalston (further away- you can either cycle or take the overground) but it is a must! They sell the best bread in all of East London. Breakfast, brunch and sandwiches are all amazing. They serve pizzas over the weekend. It is located in a courtyard that also has a brewery and cocktail bar, so it’s a nice place to go at whatever time of the day. Kingsland road in Dalston also hosts several great Vietnamese restaurants and the best tacos we have found in London (at Del 74).
