Cades Cove is an isolated valley that was home to settlers prior to the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a broad, verdant valley surrounded by mountains and is one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies. It offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing in the park. Large numbers of white-tailed deer are frequently seen, and sightings of black bear, coyote, ground hog, turkey, raccoon, skunk, and other animals are also possible.
Vehicle-free access along the Cades Cove Loop Road takes place each Wednesday, from May 5 through September 1, 2021. On these days, the 11-mile loop can be enjoyed on foot or bicycle.

The Foothills Parkway gives you another perspective of the GSMNP from a lower perspective. The views from these lower mountain ridges are spectacular. A good time to view the Smoky Mountains from Foothills Parkway is early evening when weather and visibility permits. The sunsets are breathtaking and the light across the mountain range created by the setting sun creates a display of light and shadow across the vast tier of mountains!

Greenbrier is one of the great off-the-beaten-path areas of the park. It is generally not very crowded, but boasts some of the best spring wildflower viewing and one of the best waterfalls (Ramsay Cascades) in the Smokies.
The six mile, mostly gravel, Greenbrier Road starts at Highway 321 about 6 miles east of Gatlinburg. It follows the river past the ranger station, the picnic area, the Ramsay Cascades trailhead, and dead ends at the Porters Creek trailhead.

This impressive bridge takes you back in time as you think about the history of the community and its early settlers. Frederick Emert, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, settled in this area in 1790. The bridge is named after him and his family since he was the first settler in the area.
