Cades Cove is an isolated valley that was home to settlers prior to the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a broad, verdant valley surrounded by mountains and is one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies. It offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing in the park. Large numbers of white-tailed deer are frequently seen, and sightings of black bear, coyote, ground hog, turkey, raccoon, skunk, and other animals are also possible. Vehicle-free access along the Cades Cove Loop Road takes place each Wednesday, from May 5 through September 1, 2021. On these days, the 11-mile loop can be enjoyed on foot or bicycle. https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/cadescove.htm

The Foothills Parkway gives you another perspective of the GSMNP from a lower perspective. The views from these lower mountain ridges are spectacular. A good time to view the Smoky Mountains from Foothills Parkway is early evening when weather and visibility permits. The sunsets are breathtaking and the light across the mountain range created by the setting sun creates a display of light and shadow across the vast tier of mountains! The Foothills Parkway now consists of two finished sections at either end of the 72-mile corridor. The western section now extends 33 continuous miles from Chilhowee to Wears Valley, new, extends six miles from Cosby to Interstate 40 and offers views of Mount Cammerer. https://www.gatlinburg.com/blog/post/foothills-parkway/

At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. The observation tower on the summit of Clingmans Dome offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond for visitors willing to climb the steep half-mile walk to the tower at the top. On clear days views expand over a 100 miles. Unfortunately, air pollution often limits viewing distances to under 20 miles. https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/clingmansdome.htm

Abrams Falls in Cades Cove Although Abrams Falls is only 20 feet high, the large volume of water rushing over falls more than makes up for its lack of height. The long, deep pool at its base is very picturesque. The waterfall and creek are named for a Cherokee chief whose village once stood several miles downstream. https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/abrams-falls.htm

Greenbrier is one of the great off-the-beaten-path areas of the park. It is generally not very crowded, but boasts some of the best spring wildflower viewing and one of the best waterfalls (Ramsay Cascades) in the Smokies. The six mile, mostly gravel, Greenbrier Road starts at Highway 321 about 6 miles east of Gatlinburg. It follows the river past the ranger station, the picnic area, the Ramsay Cascades trailhead, and dead ends at the Porters Creek trailhead.
