You can walk to Tillingham from the house around the back of Rye & up through the valley following the river Tillingham. It's all about organic wine there but they serve Pizza outside & they have great restaurant as well.

If you continue down float lane on the 1066 path there is a path across the fields to Icklesham on the other side of the valley, the Queens head pub. Great views back towards Rye & Winchelsea from here & look out a black Windmill on the horizon, Paul McCartneys old recording studio

The Hastings country park covers the cliff area above Pett Level all the way to Hastings town. Also called the fire hills, you can drive to the top near Fairlight & the walks & views are spectacular. From here you can see Dover, the white cliffs, Dungeness & sometimes even France in the distance. The new 'Bale House' cafe and visitor centre was created using hay bales, it's a really nice.

Also called the fire hills, you can drive to the top near Fairlight & the walks & views are spectacular. One of our favourite cycle rides from the house is to go out around the nature reserve & end up with a beer &/or a meal at Rye Harbour. The William the conqueror has a big outdoor space, serves fish & chips & pub grub with a greek twist.

The Ypres is a hidden gem just below the Rye Castle (Ypres Tower) - sometimes bands play in the beer garden which is possibly one of the best spaces for outdoor eating in Rye.

A bit further a field, Water lane is a beautiful restaurant just outside Hawkhurst - a good stop off on the way back up the A21 or just for a wonder out. It's in the grounds of St Ronins School which is a kind of Hogwarts (private). In the walled garden. We had brunch there recently & it was 5 star.

People love this pub, the building has a long history, once a soup kitchen and for a while it was a public toilet but don't let that put you off. David Rodder who created the new pub runs a successful microbrewery with his family. Fresh local beer and ales are served.

The Sourdough bread flies off the shelves in the morning, probably need to get there before 11 to get a loaf. Our favourite is the granary white & on the menu you can't go wrong with a 'fancy bacon roll'.

The Mermaid Street café is great for coffee or an ice cream on the corner where people mill about around the Antique stores, at the. bottom of picturesque Mermaid Street. Sarah & Ian are lovely hosts & there is a little hidden balcony above where you can sit with a coffee & watch the world go by.

Camber castle is an easy walk from the house, walk to Rye Harbour road & take the path out over the fields. Can be a pit stop for those that want to walk to the beach. Check opening times if you want to go in as it's not always open.

Winchelsea is a good walk or bike ride from the house, maybe an hour to walk. It's a beautiful old citadel, a village rather than a town like Rye. Built on the top of the hill when old Winchelsea was lost to the sea below, it's believed to be the blue print of a grid system layout that was then used in New York. There is a Pub and small shop with a café. Spike Milligan is buried at the ancient church at the centre of Winchelsea with 'I told you I was ill' on his epitaph. Got to love Spike.
