Къде ще бъдете

Shinjuku City, Tōkyō-to, Япония

Being famous for its cuisine and history, Kagurazaka has modern cafes, craft stores, Japanese, French and Italian restaurants. The cobblestone streets and river will remind you of Paris. Exiting from JR Iidabashi station, you can enjoy the many souvenir shops and cafes on Kagurazaka Street as you walk your way up towards my apartment.

【Experience the history of Tokyo】
Kagurazaka is sometimes referred to as a large labyrinth due to its many small lanes and alleys that were once home to geisha. During the Edo period (1603-1867), warlords’ mansions and tradesmens’ townhouses stood side by side along the slopes of Kagurazaka. In the Showa period (1926-1988) it became a famous spot for geisha and writers. Most buildings and slopes were destroyed during the Second World War, however people kept to the original layout when rebuilding the town, which is why Kagurazaka managed to preserve its quiet, refined atmosphere of the olden eras.

Enjoy getting lost in the backstreets of this historic town and you may find some of the houses once owned by famous Japanese novelist and other national icons.

【Fine cuisine】
Besides a rich history, Kagurazaka is known for its variety of foods. Enjoy freshly made sushi for an affordable price at the Sushi Academy, try some unique Japanese sweets at Isuzu or Kinozen. With many French people living in this area, you can find French cuisine as well. Creperie Le Bretagne is famous for its buckwheat crepes and Fromagerie Alpage is specialised in French cheese. Another popular dining place is the Canal Cafe, an Italian restaurant located next to the river in Sotobori with beautiful views. Whether you want to experience local cuisine or prefer the Western kitchen, this cultured town has it all.

【Sightseeing】
The famous Bishamonten (Zenkokuji) Temple is located at the top of Kagurazaka Street and is just a three-minute walk away from the apartment. During the Edo period, this was the liveliest part of Kagurazaka. At night, the temple gives a mystical feel as the lanterns light up the darkness with a bright red glow.

If you prefer modern architecture, La Kagū is a commercial complex built in a renovated warehouse owned by Shinchosha, a publishing company with a long history. The impressive wooden stairs outside were designed by the famous architect Kengo Kuma. Inside you can find apparel, general merchandise, furniture, and books.

【Shopping/souvenirs】
The place to be for souvenir shopping is Noren Kagurazaka, located at the beginning of Kagurazaka Street, right next to exit B3 of Iidabashi station (metro Tozai Line). This place offers everything from accessories to papercraft to traditional Japanese handcrafted items such as teaware and rests for your chopsticks. With prices starting as little as a few 100 yen, this shop has something to offer for everyone.

If you like tea, Rakuzan is the place to be. They have a large selection of the finest teas from all over Japan, including ceremonial grade matcha from Kyoto and highest grade genmaicha (brown rice) from Shizuoka.
