The state's oldest remaining lighthouse is open for tours daily on Bald Head Island. Built in 1817, the 90-foot brick structure helped guide ships safely to the mouth of the Cape Fear River until 1935 when it was replaced by a new lighthouse at Caswell Beach. Some 100 steps and a wooden ladder lead to the top and a spectacular view of the island, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Cape Fear River. You can explore this island by bike or golf cart (available for rental on the island) but no cars are allowed so you must reach the island by ferry from Southport. Admission to the lighthouse is $3.00 per person. The ferry charge is $15 per adult and $8 per child under 12 for roundtrip. For additional ferry information please call or visit www.oldbaldy.org.

One of the prettiest sights on Bald Head Island is Old Baldy rising above the trees, looking out over the sea, marsh and harbor, and greeting you when you arrive on the ferry. Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse and one of three that once graced Bald Head Island, is only a short walk from the ferry landing. Admission to the Smith Island Museum of History allows you to climb Old Baldy’s 108 steps for an incomparable view of the island. While you’re there, take a look at the artifacts in the Smith Island Museum and learn more about Bald Head Island’s seafaring history or pick up a souvenir in the gift shop. For those wanting to delve deeper into Bald Head Island’s past, the Smith Island Museum offers self-guided audio tours.

Old Baldy is NC's southernmost lighthouse and is visible on a clear day from Southport and Oak Island! Old Baldy's appearance is a result of decades of patchwork repair and it's 200+ years of existence!
