Quaint historical seaside town, packed withm pub, cafes, restaurants and an array of shops peddling charity bargains, sweets and confectionary, jewellery and a local High Street. Long walks along the beachfront and up the cliffs to Seaford Fort and headland.
Seaford has everything to offer from a relaxing break, doing nothing except watching the world go by from the beach to fantastic cycling trails, golf course, leisure centre and a lively and enchanting town
Seaford is a deceptively quiet small town with a lovely, mostly empty beach, between Seaford Head and Newhaven port. The town has a long and interesting history. Today we have an increasing number of nice shops and restaurants, but the town retains an old fashioned appeal. There are numerous lovely walks to be started from Seaford including easy access to the South Downs Way as well as the walk to Eastbourne along the Seven Sisters. Buses take you to Cuckmere Haven and other NT sites like Birling Gap. The town's history goes right back to prehistoric times, with ancient burial mounds (barrows) still visible round us on the Downs and Seaford Head. It had a Roman port and then a Medieval one, prior to the river Ouse changing course and the port dying - hence it was one of the famous Cinque Ports. At Tide Mills just West of the town there was a huge 19th century flour mill powered by tidal action, and later on the same site an important sea plane station in WWI, and a pioneering hospital for disabled children. All this is now ruined but with excellent information boards. In the 19th century Seaford was a flourishing resort and had many hotels on the seafront - all now gone - as well as multiple schools taking advantage of the sea air. The town played a role in both world wars with massive training camps, and there are War graves in the cemeteries of the area. Just in our side of the town, East Blatchington, there is a lot of fascinating local history. We have various books to lend! The local Museum is in a Napoleonic era Martello Tower, in itself fascinating and one of the few Towers you can get inside easily.
