Meadowcroft Rockshelter, the oldest site of human habitation in North America, provides a unique glimpse into the lives of prehistoric hunters and gathers. This National Historic Landmark, located in Avella, Washington County, Pa., features a massive, 16,000-year-old rock overhang used by our earliest ancestors for shelter. Dig into archaeological evidence that reveals the earliest signs of human habitation dating back 16000 years at the Meadowcroft Rockshelter. The artifacts from the site show the area may have been continually inhabited for more than 16,000 years, since Paleo-Indian times.
