The only vertical cave in the continent and home to the oldest 45-million-year-old stalagmite in Europe was initially used as a refuge and then as a worship place.Macedonian generals also used the cave in the 4th century BC as a refuge after their conspiracy against Alexander the Great. It regained popularity after the visit of Marquis de Nouadel, ambassador of France to Constantinople in 1673 where he performed Mass. Early visitor's vandalisms and the Russian, Italian and German occupation have much altered its original condition, but it still retains the same charm commemorated by the parian poet Archilochus. Parts of it still decorate the Hermitage Museum. The standard ticket is 6 euros.

The biggest cave with stalagmites and stalactites in Greece. Definitely worth seeing.
