GENERAL – ON THE ISLAND There is a large Tesco store and an Aldi supermarket in Sheerness. A weekly market and a busy high street with Greggs, Boots, Pound shop, Specsavers and several other local shops, hairdressers, barbers etc. There is also a library in the High Street with many summer activities for families. There is a leisure complex with a gym and an indoor pool. Bluetown in Sheerness has a Heritage Centre inside one of the countries only remaining music halls. It has a wealth of information about the history of the area. Elmley National Reserve is a large nature reserve with a wealth of water birds and wildlife of national importance. There is currently a £5.00 per car charge for entry. Barton’s Point Coastal Park is a large open space with children’s play area and a miniature railway attraction open at weekends. The Shisha Bar in Sheerness is a great place for grown ups to explore cocktails, music and nighttime entertainment. As you come on to the island you will find Neats Court, a shopping complex with Morrisons, a petrol station, a car wash and other high street shops and amenities. Minster has a lovely beach with beautiful walks, Minster also ahs Minster Abbey and the Minster Gatehouse Museum. Small venues but interesting with some beautiful architectural features. Queenborough has a lovely harbor with cruises often leaving daily. Several companies offer drinks cruises, sunset cruises and fishing expeditions. Leysdown is the Isle of Sheppeys traditional seaside resort – it is a fabulous place to spend the day and the children really enjoy it. You will find a range of places to eat, including several cafes and pie and mash shops. You will also find a beach and shops providing buckets, spades, amusements, candy floss and everything you would expect from the British seaside. BEACHES There are a good selection of beaches on the island, The most popular is Leysdown with its vibrant seaside atmosphere. Sheerness has a pebble beach that is quieter but close to the children’s play area and sand pit. Shellness is also popular with beach goers for a quieter experience. The Leas at Minster is also a lovely walk along the beach – you will also find a little cabin there that does amazing food if you get hungry for a quick snack. EATING OPTIONS Neats Court has Starbucks, Costa, KFC, Burger King and a pub that does food (however, as of May’21 it has not reopened). There is also an amazing desert restaurant called Kreams. Morrison’s supermarket also has a café (closed during covid restrictions). This is great value for money – especially with their children’s meals. Sheerness has a Witherspoons, McDonalds, Greggs, lots of independent cafes (Try the Beano – Sheerness favourite for full English breakfast). Tesco in Sheerness has a café (closed during covid restrictions). It also has a dominoes and independent burger bars and fish and chip shops. The Hearty Ferry is outstanding for food and drink, however, you will need to book in advance and leave card details. The Flying Dutchman in Queenborough does good pub grub and a range of drinks. The Harps Inn in Minster also does very good food at reasonable prices. Both have outside eating options and are family friendly. Witherspoons in Sheerness High Street is good for value and quality, they also do great breakfasts. The Halfway has a range of Chinese, Indian, kebab and fish and chip take always. It also has a very popular Greek restaurant Meme’s Meze on the corner of the junction. It is always advisable to book in advance.
