Very Unique Experience

The Fusion of Art, Science, and Magic This historical structure is a uniquely resonant tabernacle and energy machine sited on a powerful geomagnetic vortex in the magical Mojave Desert. The NASA scientist in the 50's who designed it based his design on his "communication and instructions from aliens" as he put it. Be sure to call to make an appointment to visit! The owners operate sound baths in the historical alien-inspired building.

A prolific artist specializing in found art, Noah lived in the Joshua Tree area for decades. His work has been featured in the MOMA, among other great museums. After he passed away, his home became a living outdoor museum. It's just 25 minutes away from downtown Joshua Tree and a terrific place to walk around at sunset, marveling in the insane sculptural works of this mad genius. You can do a quick trip of 15 minutes to get the gist of the place, but to really take it in and wander the artists 'ruins' of found object art, you should plan on spending at least an hour minimum. Yet another funky, trippy discovery in Joshua Tree that many visitors miss as they come in to see the National Park but don't realize that Joshua Tree has much more to offer.

If you want to do something that only the rare (and most intrepid) tourist adventures out to: Check out Amboy Crater. Nearly an hour drive out in the middle of the desert towards Vegas. This dramatic, massive black lava crater emerges from the eerie white, sandy flat landscape. Along the famous route 66, this long forgotten (well, never discovered) area of the CA desert is hot, flat, lonely and desolate. And also surreal, otherworldly and strange. You can hike to the top of the crater but BRING WATER. and avoid going during hot summer days. Best to go in winter, early spring or late fall. You have to go off road to approach the crater but the dirt roads are flat. Distances are MUCH further than they look so be careful and if you do come out here. Please let someone know where you are going. This is a very harsh landscape and folks who underestimate the elements have not been so fortunate. The Marine's from the 29 Palms Marine base regularly send units out to look for dead bodies (those who didn't bring any water and thought hiking up a lava crater in 120 degree heat was a great idea.) Although the crater is only 300 ft tall, it is on wobbly lava rock and takes more energy than it looks like. The hike out and back is 3 miles.

Giant Rock is the largest freestanding boulder in North America and is purported to be the largest free standing boulder in the world. Native Americans consider it to be sacred. This massive boulder has been the site of beatniks living in a cave under the rock, new age UFO followers who have gathered here to talk to aliens, and most recently, DJ parties and neo-hippy pagen gatherings doing yoga in the shade of the rock for a sunrise salutation. There are dramatic rocks in the National Park but if you want to see the biggest rock you'll ever see, come here.

The legendary Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace has been delighting locals and travelers alike since 1982, with its mesquite barbeque, live music, dancing and friendly service. Musicians from Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys, Grizzly Bear, One Republic, Lucinda Williams and many more have graced the P&H stage. The legendary bar has become an indie rock favorite with a vibe that can't be matched. It's always a scene and packed no matter if a band is playing or not. Check their website for the line up. It's worth a day time visit too. Grab a burger and beer and just watch the crowd; an oddball mix of desert locals, tourists, bikers, hipsters, and just about every walk of life.

Pioneertown was established in 1946 when Dick Curtis shared his dream for a "Living Breathing Movie Set". The western town was built for movies / filming and the owners also purchased 32,ooo Acres of land which would soon be known as Pioneertown. It's a a functioning 188o's themed town which is about 30 minutes from Joshua Tree town. Stop at Pappy's for a beer or lunch and then explore the town and shops. A fun place to spend an afternoon.

Food scene

Joshua Tree's local answer to Pappy and Harriet’s. If you aren't in the mood for the 35-minute drive to Pappy's (and the crazy crowds that Pappy's draws) and you’re in the mood to keep it local. Head to Joshua Tree Saloon. As the name suggests, this restaurant/bar has a kitschy Old West aesthetic, and after three beers and a whiskey shot, you’re completely fine with it. The menu is full of burgers, and the like. It's just ok. We recommend other places for good food. But worth having a drink after a long day of taking photos of big rocks. There’s live music most nights and a boozy brunch on Sundays. Expect an odd-ball collection of dusty locals, bikers, tourists, randoms, desert drifters, and hipsters. But for something just as unique and less crowded and cliché, go to Copper Room at the Yucca Valley Airport instead. Just as unique, without the giant crowd and with better drinks and better food.

The cultural epicenter of the high desert, Pappy & Harriets is a fun fusion of a lively bar scene, a great Western-style saloon/bar/restaurant, albeit touristy, and an EPIC live music venue. If you are going for a meal, expect a very, very long wait. The service at Pappy's is notoriously SLOW. Pappy's is always understaffed and nonchalant about it. And no one seems to mind. Plus, the food is very filling (once you finally get it) with a heaping dish, no matter what you order. The extraordinarily long wait time means lots of people-watching and perhaps a musical show. In addition to the regular acts that play here weekly, big names like Paul McCartney and others have been known to stop in for spontaneous gigs. On any given night, you might see a local band or famous all-star bands that draw huge crowds. Check their website for the music schedule - many shows sell out fast. Call for reservations for lunch or dinner, or walk in and wait. If it's a busy Friday or Saturday night, prepare to fight your way to the bar–where you can try to order food or hope to even get a drink, or wait for 1 1/2 hours to get a table in the restaurant. Always a motley cast of characters: Desert hipsters, bikers, oddballs, and well mostly, tourists - waiting 2 hours for a burger and a beer. Another spot that makes the high-desert such a funky discovery.

Our personal Mecca, Natural Sisters features delicious and healthy vegetarian food. Plus it's just a 2 minutes from Art Loft Joshua Tree in the center of town. Great smoothies, breakfast burritos, insane salads and wraps--we've been known to eat all our meals here on some weekends. Seating is minimal, so we recommend grabbing your food to go. Pro tip: when the lines are long on the weekends you can phone in your food order in advance. The wait can be LONG and service tends to be slow. Don't come here if you are in a rush. Side note: There is a natural food store next door filled with items you might want for your hike or to stock up on for the house.

A fantastic breakfast and lunch cafe in Yucca Valley. Unique decor, delicious food, fresh coffee and surprisingly fast service. It's always busy, and seating is not always easy to find, but it's still manages to be worth it. The cafe is eclectic and filled with high-desert characters and tourists. Funny how can easily tell them apart. The food is impressive too. As an extra bonus, Frontier also features live music many evenings. Call to check if they have a musical performance while you are in town.

A tiny coffee company with, yes, you guessed it, exceptionally slow service. If you have tons of time and are not in a rush, come here and bring a book or have your phone loaded with emails you need to respond to... because getting you coffee here can take 15-20 minutes. That said, the coffee is the best in the high-desert and it's just 2 minutes from the Art Loft. A cool vibe and hipster scene but I prefer just to make my own coffee at home since the wait can be maddening.

Located in a historical saloon featured in many westerns filmed back in the 1940's in Pioneer town, the owners recently updated and launched a new bar and restaurant. Finally another eatery and place to grab a drink in Pioneer Town (other than Pappy & Harriot's). The Mexican-inspired menu features an assortment of great cocktails and a taco assortment of options like beef brisket, mushroom asada, chicken tinga and pork carnitas. They also serve a Mexican inspired breakfast menu - all delicious options (8am-11am).

The desert's answer to LA's hipster food scene. This unassuming off the dusty desert hiway restaurant is about 35 minutes from Joshua Tree way out in Landers. Who would have guessed this little roadside eatery would have the very best food in all of the high-desert. A gourmet selection of incredible dishes. Check their website for hours (and their instagram feed for updates). JUST GO! Make make a reservation or go early to get a table. This is a very popular spot and always packed. For good reason.

Our favorite place to get your grab-n-go breakfast, lunch or snack items before exploring into the park. Fantastic collection of pre-made items. Everything from breakfast burritos to Italian subway sandwiches to turkey & provolone + yummy pints of potato salad or kale salad. Vegan options as well. A+ ingredients. Located next to the visitor center in 'downtown' Joshua Tree... just 2 minutes from ArtLoft!

Newly opened and a wonderful addition to Joshua Tree. Part of the new wave of high-quality, curated (and yes, some hipster-y) restaurants, bars and cafés hitting the high-desert. Fantastic grab-n-go options of sandwiches, snacks, and pre-made meals including a wonderful coffee bar. The Dez is very popular and often has a line out the door. But the service is quick and friendly. Grab a to-go meal here for your hike (or at Roadrunner cafe) before heading into the park.

If you are looking for fantastic healthy food options, in a lovely setting, with prices that are the most affordable in all the hi-desert, just drive 4 minutes from 'downtown' Joshua Tree to the Joshua Tree Retreat Center (aka Institute of Mentalphysics). You'll find a wonderful vegetarian cafe (with the most affordable prices in the desert) called: Food For Thought Café. You can explore the grounds of the retreat center after. They serve breakfast and lunch, and open Thurs-Sun from 7am - 3pm.

Absolutely the best pizza in the desert. Hand down! If you are a pizza lover, nothing else in JT compares. You'd have to drive to Palm Springs to try to find something as delicious and even then, nothing we'd tried in the lower desert compares to Tost.

Another of Joshua Tree's more recent new bar/restaurant creations. A refurbished 1950's airport lounge along the Yucca Valley airport tarmac. Superb crafted drinks and a delicious menu options. A unique space that the rat pack and Hollywood stars would fly into for a hang out, drink and meal in the desert. Don't miss the Copper Room.

Yet, another funky bar/restaurant for the hi-desert (opening in 2023). Walking into Snake Bite Roadhouse, the design elements immediately take you into another realm. A collection of random artwork, oddball vintage/retro decor.. The space even features a pool table that used to live in Los Angeles at the Rockefeller Mansion. The menu covers just about everything: Salads, sliders, burgers, pastas, tacos... everything from mac n cheese to a shrimp cocktail. In the back, check out Joshua Tree's latest fun addition: a roller rink!

Great hike / natural wonder

One of the most amazing hikes is right in our backyard. Coyote Hole Spring Canyon features immense boulders that have been carved smooth by a constantly running stream of water from the overflowing aquifer. Plus you'll find native American petroglyphs carved on the walls! Given the drought, there is no flowing water now, but the textures of the land and rocks are truly inspiring. You follow a dry river bed to the hole - not a trail. And well worth the short walk (10-15 minutes). Nearly no tourists even know about this amazing find. It should be part of the National Park but since it's not, it sees no crowds and you can enjoy this spectacular natural wonder to yourself! There are many ways to enter Lower Coyote hole, but the easiest is to park at the corner of Alturas Dr. and Alta Loma Dr. take the flat wide sandy wash to the left and follow it towards the canyon–which slowly rises around you as you walk, a prefect place for the kids to run around and explore. Lots rock to climb with parent close by! Please help in keeping the area clean by packing out all trash. Google map "Coyote Hole Spring" and view satellite to visualize the hike and area before you go. It is just off the road but because there are no trail markers, it is good to get a sense of the direction before just heading out.

Centrally located within Joshua Tree National Park, Ryan Mountain rises over 1,000 feet above its western Sonoran Desert surroundings, easily providing the best and most accessible 360-degree views of the 790,636-acre park. The hike itself is relatively straightforward, starting on the mountain's north side (right off of Park Boulevard) and gradually climbing 1,070 feet over the duration of the 1.5-mile trail. While hiking you'll pass the park's classic sandstone rocky crags, blackbrush, Mojave yucca, and countless wildflowers during the spring season. Once you've reached the 5,457-foot summit, stand atop the mountain's cairn and take in the expansive views, including San Jacinto Peak (10,804 feet) to the west across the Coachella Valley and San Gorgonio Mountain (11,503 feet) to the northwest, part of the San Bernardino Mountains and Southern California's tallest peak. You can explore the remains of a cattle ranch along the Ryan Ranch Trail and the gold mining operation, Lost Horse Mine. Note: Before embarking on this 3-mile hike, be sure to have ample sun protection and an extra layer as it is common for winds to be quite strong at the summit. Bring water. You can make this a great workout if you walk fast or run up the trail in sections.

If you've never visited an oasis, this hike is a must. An easy to access and pristine example of an intact desert oasis ecosystem of well-supplied spring water and beautiful palm trees and all the desert plant and wildlife that lives in and also visits this breathtaking spot. Located just off Hwy 62 between 29 Palms and Joshua Tree, you can do this hike without paying to enter Joshua Tree National Park. It is somewhat steep for the first .75 miles of the hike and then you go down and reach the oasis about 1.5 miles from the parking lot and since this is an out and back trail RT is about 3 miles with about 600 ft of elevation gain. I enjoy it later in the day - when the heat dissipates. It takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to complete. It's nice to explore the oasis once you arrive and not just snap a photo and turn around.

This rather boringly named but stunning secret is a beautiful area to explore just 7 minutes from Art Loft and happens to be located at our sister property: SkyHouse Joshua Tree. Also known as Section 6, the Desert View Wilderness is filled which connect to hundreds of square miles of wilderness and to the National Park. For a beautiful (and easy access) hike at sunset or a job in the morning, skip the long lines at the National Park entrance and drive a few minutes to the gate. Put on your hiking shoes or trial runners and explore this stunning slice of wilderness. You can stay on the main dirt road or explore the many trails that break off from the road. The entire area is in a giant valley so it is impossible to get lost. If you walk up 2 miles on the dirt road, you will see a sign that you are entering the National Park. If you have an off road, high-clearance vehicle, you can drive up into the conservation area BUT keep in mind, the gates close and lock at sunset. Ask me for a trail map if you are interested in checking this area out! Drive up Park Boulevard and take a left on Onaga Trail, drive 1/4 mile to the gate entrance. I HIGHLY recommend the trai. that veers off to the right in a diagonal direction just after you enter the gate. This trail will take you up along the the rock hills you see to your right and winds around beautiful boulder outcrops. It eventually goes up t the view point, from there you can take the dirt road back or just head back down the trail from where you came. 62323 Onaga Trail, Joshua Tree can be used as a GPS tag for google maps but be sure to park at the gate and not at this address.

If this is your first time to Joshua Tree, be sure to explore Hidden Valley Nature Trail. About a 1 ½ walk through an incredible boulder valley. Easy and gorgeous and the perfect way to warm up before harder hikes like Ryan Mountain. Avoid on weekends as it can get crowded here. It's one of the favorite destinations in the park.

Located in the National Park, Lost Horse Mine is a hardy relic of the California Gold Rush era and one of the best-preserved mines found in Joshua Tree National Park. The history of the mine dates back to Johnny Lang, a rancher who bought the claim for $1000 in 1890. This mine was very successful, producing more than 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 of silver in its 37 years of operation. That’s around $5 million in today’s currency. While the mine is definitely the highlight of this hike, there are other gems to be discovered along the way. Lost Horse Mine is accessed either by hiking the entire loop around Lost Horse Mountain (6.7 miles), or by an easier out-and-back hike directly to the mine (4 miles round trip).

Our favorite store in the high-desert. Moon Wind Trading Co is your go-to spot for gifts, natural beautification & wellness, fashion, jewelry, art and tons of very unique handmade objects, art and fashion from local artists. The space is beautifully designed and merchandised and the staff are friendly and helpful. It's a bit of a drive (out in Landers) but if you are going to La Copine, it's across the street and worth popping in. There are just too many cool things in one place not to buy something! You can also grab a sandwich and coffee drink next door at The Giant Rock Meeting Room when you are done shopping.

Drawing inspiration from their favorite travels, owners Andrew and Chelsea Evans founded their boutique as a way to share items that evoked a sense of wonder and a call to adventure. Offering some super-cute items like the Roaming Travelers Signature Scent Candle, swimwear and other apparel, you can certainly feel both the inspiration of wanderlust as well as the homage paid to the distinct style of the high desert.

A funky and fun must-see collection of gifts, books, magazines, snacks, collectables, home decor and odd ball but yet must-have-for-no-good reason items. The shop is more unique as the items in it however. It once was an old route 66 gas station but the owners lovingly restored the beat up guest station (keeping the old 1940s gas pump). Only 2 minutes away and near many other 'downtown' Joshua Tree shops.

Take a trip out to 29 Palms to check out this find. A fun shop of unique, curated, fun items. Ever since Hi-Desert Daydream opened its doors, the shop has been bringing together an incredible community of local artisans under one roof. Serving as a 1,200-square-foot brick and mortar for a number of local vendors, such as Bobo Design Studio, Mojave Moon Apothecary, PAU and more, Hi-Desert Daydream is the product of the collaborative effort of Roaming Travelers founder Chelsea Evans and 39 Fox owner Melisa Tennies.

Hoof & The Horn is without a doubt one of the coolest hubs for all things high desert. This shop has everything any Joshua Tree aficionado could ever want, from fun headwear and bandanas to art prints and patches. The shop also carries Brixton products and will be offering some supercool vintage finds in the near future. Although their inventory is expansive, it’s easy to see that the boutique’s brand stays strong and true to its desert inspiration.

Want a classic western themed desert experience filled with desert rats, drifters, tourists, bikers, hipsters, ex-military types, and mostly, just regular ol locals. The JT Saloon often has a band going and is always full. Come for a burger and beer. Check out the scene. It's Joshua Tree's answer to Pappy & Harriet's. That said, Copper Room is another option, less crowded, better food and drinks and just as unique and special of a historical location.

The cultural epicenter of the high desert, Pappy & Harriets is a fun fusion of a lively bar scene, a great Western-style saloon restaurant and an EPIC live music venue. In addition to the regular acts that play here weekly, big names like Paul McCartney and others have been known to stop in for spontaneous gigs. On any given night, you might see a local band or bands that you might find at Coachella. Regardless, check their website for the music schedule since many shows are sold out. Call for reservations and if it's a busy Friday or Saturday night, prepare to fight your way to the bar–where you can order food, or wait for 1 1/2 hours to get a table in the restaurant. That may seem long, but time flies at Pappy's as you'll certainly strike up conversations with the motley cast of characters who visit. From hipsters to desert locals to mid-west tourists. Another find that makes the high-desert such a funky and fun discovery.

This is hands down the best new bar in the high-desert. Skip the cliché tourist-packed Joshua Tree Saloon and hang out at a 1950's style airport lounge. Great mixed drinks and a unique desert airport lounge vibe.

in Pioneer Town, all the tourists now go to Pappy's. But the locals go to Red Dog Saloon, just 100 ft away. So if you want a local vibe, a great drink selection and events that are smaller and more intimate (like the Sunday brunch and parties), skip the packed crowds of Pappy's (and their famously slow service) and check out Red Dog Saloon.
