Nearest & Best Places for Food

A lot of these eateries are in Pāʻia town, close to the Kūʻau condo. It can be hard to find free parking in Pāʻia, so taking the Maui bus is an option. There are two bus stops in Pāʻia town and one very close to Kūʻau Plaza. I provide the bus schedule and information in the condo for your consideration.
This is an absolute must when staying in Kūʻau! You’re a one-minute walk away from one of the top-rated restaurants in the country! Get a taste of the freshest fish you'll ever have, locally caught by fishermen including my dad, Alan Cadiz. I cannot emphasize enough the exceptional quality of not only the food, but the service, ambiance, and location of Mama's. Open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:00am–8:45pm. Budget $100+ per person. Valet parking only - close proximity from the condo allows for walk-in access. Make reservations as far in advance as possible; they book out months ahead. However, many of my guests have had luck as walk-ins. It may help to mention you are staying in the neighborhood.

Flatbread Company is great for families, casual nights out, or even ordering to-go. They source organic ingredients locally and hold fundraisers for local charities often. Sit by the windows, at the bar, in a quiet booth in the back, or reserve upstairs for private parties. There are great options for gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets.

Beaches

Kūʻau Plaza is just one mile from Ho'okipa, a very popular park for both locals and visitors. The park is a large cove with beautiful views of sparkling blue water, turtles swimming and resting on the beach, surfers, windsurfers, white sand beach, and tide pools. Parking can get crowded, but there is a walking path in the grass just off the mountain-side of the road from the condo to the park. In the winter, big wave surfers charge the XL waves and whales breach off shore. In the summer, the beach is popular with sun tanners and windsurfers. Turtles and sometimes monk seals come up to rest on the sand. Please always respect wildlife and stay at least 9ft away (for turtles) or 50ft (for monk seals) and no flash photography or loud noises.

Kūʻau Cove, also known as Mamaʻs Beach, is the closest beach to the condo. Itʻs just a 2-minute walk from the condo porch to the sand! This is a small cove with a calm "pool" inside the reef. Honu (sea turtles) are often seen swimming in the pool or resting on the sand. They are not dead and do not need water splashed on them! Always keep a distance of at least 10 ft/ 3m.

My family's small business offers private and group instruction at all levels of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wing-foiling. Established in 1985, HST has been setting the standard for water sports instruction for more than 35 years. Started by my dad, Alan Cadiz, and administered by my mom, Patti, I have taught my fair share of beginner windsurf lessons. We are dedicated to offering a safe, efficient, and fun time in the wind and waves. More information at hstwindsurfing. com or call 808/ 871/ 5423 to speak with Patti. Road to Hāna

The Road to Hāna can be an all-day trip, so I recommend starting early in the morning. You may choose to head towards Hāna and turn around halfway through your day or do the full loop around Haleakalā and back down through Kula. The latter takes longer and requires a capable and narrow car but takes you through several unique microclimates. Watch for cattle and rocks on the road. Check for road closures as there are often rock slides. Be wary of flash floods! They happen very quickly; get to high ground and avoid water if it starts raining or if water levels start rising. The road to Hāna is not just about getting to Hāna; there are several attractions along the way so be prepared to stop. That being said, visitors tend to drive slower than the locals who live out there, so be willing to pull over and let them pass. Please park in designated public parking areas and do not block the highway because it could obstruct emergency service vehicles. I highly recommend taking a tour with a bus company! They are fun, social, educational, and they hit great spots. Independent vehicles have a big impact on this narrow road, and buses are a great alternative. Plus, you don't have to drive! Packing list: towels, slippers & closed-toed shoes, water, snacks or lunch, sun-protective clothing, sunscreen, day pack, cooler with ice packs, cash, gas for +150 miles of range, ginger candy, or motion sickness meds if personally necessary.

This area of the coast has been inhabited by native people for hundreds of years and remains an integral part of a thriving culture. Visitors to the Kīpahulu District are treated to views of waterfalls, sweeping ocean vistas, and Hawaiian cultural experiences. Observe archaeological sites such as ancient rock walls. Do not stack or take rocks (kapu). No swimming in the Pools of ‘Oheʻo. Be aware of extreme flash floods, falling rocks, variable water quality. Stay on trail and out of closed areas. Every Saturday morning from 7-11am. Dozens of farmers and local creators gather for great deals on local, organic produce, crafts, food, flowers, and very friendly people with local knowledge. Unique from the Kahului farmer’s market as it features more authentic products and locally grown food. “Oh the people you’ll meet!”

Hosmer Grove is a one mile loop trail with low elevation gain near the entrance of Haleakalā National Park. It features a pine and eucalyptus forest and expansive native shrubland. Native Hawaiian honeycreepers - our rare and endangered birds - flit and sing overhead. There are benches and binoculars along the trail for excellent bird watching views. Some bird species you'll see here include: ʻapapane, ʻiʻiwi, amakihi, pueo (owl). Native plants you'll see: greensword, ʻōhiʻa, iliahi, ʻōhelo, kūkaenēnē... Ask for a birds and plants of the summit guide at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center.

Volunteer events on every other Saturday. Spend a day giving back in some of Maui's most precious and beautiful dry-land forest and connecting with local folks over conservation. "With only 3% of this forest type remaining, without action, Hawaiian dry forests lie on the edge of extinction…" But Auwahi Forest Restoration project is acting on it! Every other Saturday, a small group of volunteers join Art Mederios in restoring native, endemic, and endangered plants on the remote backside of Haleakalā. Sign up for event notifications & learn more at auwahi (dot) org

I was an intern at Haleakalā NP in 2021. There is a lot to see within the park- both at the summit and coastline. Explore trails, birdwatch at Hosmer Grove, learn about Hawaiian culture, see the sunrise and sunset, tent or cabin camp inside the crater, and discover endangered plants, birds, and insects that live nowhere else on Earth! Ask a ranger at the Visitor Center for information on Geology, Astronomy, Flora and Fauna, and access. The best thing you can do before Haleakalā is plan your visit! It's a 1-hour, winding, steep road to the park entrance. At 10,000ft elevation, the climate is cold, possibly windy and wet - Bring layers! Reservations are required for sunrise. The park entrance fee is $30. Parking is limited, so check out Leleiwi and Kalahaku Overlooks for summit alternatives.
