The Village Barn and Stone house are 300 year old properties sited on the protected village of Didyma, home to the amazing ancient Apolllo temple. They were once Greek owned houses before the Turkish Republic was formed by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk making them a unique place to stay and experience. What makes Didyma even more unique is that underneath these very old stone buildings rests many unexplored areas of archialogical importance which are linked to the Apollo Temple and the city of Miletos.
Historical, mystical and tranquil you will find nothing else quite like our accommodation in Didyma. A truly unique experience!
The 300 year old Barn and Stone House have been sympathetically renovated to recreate an individual but homely Turkish feeling to each of the properties.
When you stay with us you will experience real village life, where the farmers carry out their day to day duties and local people go about their daily business . You will often see sheep, cows and goats being taken for their daily walks so that they can graze in local fields and it's not unusual to spot the odd chicken running around aimlessly! You will also see lots of cats and dogs in most places around town and although they are not "house pets" as we know them they are an integral part of everyday Turkish life. Turkish living is very uncomplicated and simple, based very much on traditional values where the whole family muck in and help out.
Despite the quiet village location the Village house is surrounded by the Aegean coastline and it is only a stones throw away from the local beaches, in fact on a clear day you actually have a view of the sea from the garden if you look hard enough!
The shining light though is the fact that the simply stunning ancient Apollo Temple is a minutes walk from the Village house. Steeped in history from Greek and Roman times it is a site to behold, hence the reason that Didyma is a protected area. Can you imagine? Underneath the ground you walk on in and around the house is an ancient city!
Around the corner there are a number of lovely restaurants and bars that offer local turkish cuisine and drinks with good service and hospitality. Sit back, relax and gaze at the fantastic views of the temple from any one of the venues of your choice. You may even like to try the national drink of Turkey which is a spirit called Rakı or the national branded beer called Efes.
It is worth mentioning at this point that we do have modern conveniences!
Wifi is available and there is also music via our Sonos system. A lounge TV and DVD player with a small selection of DVDs are provided.
The Saturday market is an experience that shouldn't be missed. Bafa Lake, Iasos, Doğanbey, Akbuk, Kuşadasi, Ephesus, Priene and the beautiful mountain wine village of Sirince are all within easy reach. In April the village hosts the Didim Vegfest for a 4 day weekend which is an extravaganza of food, dancing, music, eating, drinking and celebration so come and enjoy!!
