The villa is situated in a quiet urbanization in Maro near the Caves of Nerja 3km east of Nerja on the eastern Costa Del Sol. Maro has its own 'mini balcony' set in front of the pretty village's church and also its own beach. Nearby Nerja has an abundance of shops, restaurants and bars and many beaches.
The very pretty and charming village of Maro, with a population of 800, is situated on the coast, 3 kilometres to the east of Nerja and 53 kilometres to the east of Malaga, in the region of Andalucia called Axarquia. The Nerja Caves are located close to Maro. Few visitors knew anything about this part of the coast until 1959, when five young boys, out hunting for bats behind Maro discovered a remarkable system of caves and ancient cave paintings. Now the caves attract visitors every day who come to wonder at this underground cathedral with its strange, melting-wax rocky architecture and what is reputed to be the largest natural column in the world. Maro boasts excellent tapas bars and popular restaurants from where the views across open fields to the sea are quite spectacular. Maro`s whitewashed buildings are a good example of the common domestic architecture in towns and villages on this part of the Mediterranean coastline. The village dates back to the early Christian era, its first structure being the Roman fortification known historically as Detunda, meaning "defence." This is now the site of the Plaza de la Iglesia, the Casa Granade and the beginning of Calle Ancha. It is a genuine pleasure to stroll through the village streets, with flowerpots on balconies and all the charm of a true Andalucian coastal village. One of the most beautiful streets is Calle Maravillas, where one can look out over the sea from the vantage points. There are also wonderful views from here of the surrounding countryside. Beside the Balcón de Maro, one finds the Iglesia de Nuestra Séñora de las Maravillas, dating from the 17th century. Here also is the Casa Grande and the ruins of the old sugar works, the building of which began in 1585, financed by the then Lord of Maro, Luis de Armengol. Not far from the village centre, beside the N-340 road going towards Nerja, is another famous monument, the Águila Aqueduct. This was built between 1879 and 1880, to ensure that water would reach the San Joaquín sugar factory. There is a section of old Roman road beside the sugar factory, on the way from Antonino de Cástulo to Malaca, on which the Detunda fortification was built.

Maro has a small but beautiful beach set in a cove, accessed via a road winding down the cliffs. For anyone interested in snorkelling, the waters off this beach offer one of the better areas in the region with a diversity of sealife. The Nerja Caves where skeletal remains and artefacts dating from 30,000BC to the Bronze Age, were discovered in 1959. Wall paintings inside the caves date from the Palaeolithic and post-Palaeolithic periods. The visitor is able to enter various different chambers including one which houses the world's widest column as well as very large independent stalactites and stalagmites. Every July a festival of flamenco music and dance is held inside the caves. Nerja is a tourism-oriented town situated on the coast 50 kilometres east of Malaga and has a population of 22,000 which increases with tourism during the summer months. It is a very attractive white town that has maintained a great charm despite growing numbers of foreign residents and tourists. The local authority adheres strictly to building regulations and new developments are built to resemble Andalucian villages which has allowed the town to avoid being blighted by the concrete high-rise scenario which has been the inevitable result of the tourist boom in some of the coastal resorts. . The old part of the town, full of interesting shops and tapas bars, dates from the 14th century and has a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets in typical Moorish style. Nerja's charm is partly due to its beautiful location on a plateau above the sea with all kinds of different beaches and coves. The combination of the beautiful Balcon de Europa and the typical narrow Spanish streets in the old town gives Nerja a pleasant atmosphere. The two main shopping streets are Calle Cristo (with the post office Correo) and Calle Pintada, with a wide variety of interesting shops to browse in. Because the town has developed later than the coast west of Malaga, there is very little high rise. On one side Nerja has agricultural fields and on the other site it has a rocky protected environment with lovely viewing points and beaches. The coastline is about 16 kilometres long of which 13 kilometres are beaches. The mountains of the Sierra Almijara, which lie to the north, finish abruptly at the Mediterranean. The magnificent cliffs form natural coves and bays which stretch for miles along this part of the coast. There are 9 kilometres of well maintained and differing sandy beaches, shared by fishermen and sunbathers.

One of the most popular spots within the town is the Balcón de Europa, built on the previous site of a 10th century castle, hanging over cliffs and beaches to gain better advantage of spectacular views. High arches and trees shade horses and carts that are transport around the town. Ancient cannons, which once spurned forth pirates and invaders, stand guard and add a touch of history. The parish church of El Salvador, in the same area, is 17th century Baroque-Mudejar which has recently been restored.

East of the Balcon is the little Playa de el Salon, still flanked by fishermen's cottages, followed by a two kilometre stretch of Torrecillo and Playazo. In the other direction there are the beaches of Chorrillo, Carabeo, Carabeillo and Burriana. On Burriana Beach there are internationally famous fish restaurants that, due to the mild climate, are able to remain open all year. The beautiful Jardines de Capistrano Playa descend to this beach. Throughout the town there are numerous other restaurants that offer a wide variety of international cuisine. Nerja was a Roman settlement known as Detunda. Ruins of Detunda have been found close to Maro just 3 kilometres to the east. The Castulo-Malaca Roman road, which linked the provinces of Jaen and Almeria passed through Nerja and the remains can be seen on the outskirts of the town along with an old Roman bridge. Later, during Moorish occupation, the town was called Narixa, and flourished from agriculture and the silk trade. Nerja also has a history of sugar cane cultivation and the remains of refineries and the amazing intact five-storey Las Aguilas aqueduct built in the 1800s, which carried water to the local Maro sugar factory, can be seen. Nerja is a perfect location from which you can start exploring nature, Andalusian culture and other cities like Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Ronda and Malaga.
