Join Laura, the founder of Laura's Lean Beef, Laura's Mercantile and Wildcat Willy's distillery, at her farm at the edge of the bluegrass. The entire 1200 acres are open to guests, with easy access to the Red River Gorge, Winchester and Lexington. See farm animals and organic crops such as hemp, check out the aging barn for whiskey, while staying in an 18th century cabin updated with granite countertops, new beds and mattresses, modern bathrooms, and solar panels.

Помещението
Our historic cabin, located on Mt. Folly Farm, is an official Kentucky Landmark, which Laura’s family has owned and operated since the 1820’s. Laura is the founder of Laura's Lean Beef, the first national no-antibiotic, no-growth hormone beef program . She now is involved with organic farming, a farm-to-table restaurant and farm-to-bottle distillery, and carbon sequestration in agricultural soils. Her goal is to share a country experience with visitors. In high season, visitors can pick fresh vegetables from the garden for farmers market price. A small store is back of the cabin, where farm-raised hemp products, hemp chocolate, farm-raised beef , chicken, eggs, cornmeal and grits are available for purchase, as are books written by local authors. A golf cart is also available for rental. Payment is an honor box.

The log house sits on more than 1000 acres of Kentucky’s rolling pastures, 45 minutes east of Lexington, near Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, and the small town of Winchester. Even with the local attractions, many guests may choose to stay on the property and enjoy the escape from everyday life.

The land, on which the cabin was built, was patented in 1784 to James Garrard Sr., Kentucky’s second governor. Exactly when the cabin was built is lost to history, but it was common for settlers to build a “pen”, or room, in this case 16 by 18 feet, to stake their claim. (We have plans to date the building using dendrochronology, but haven’t done it yet.)

We can make a good case that at least one room of the cabin dates from the 1780’s. The back “ell” probably was built around 1850. We’ve gutted it and completely remodeled it, for a modern kitchen and pantry.

The property has two cabin bedrooms, one a master, and one a “bunk” room with a fine double bed and twin. The cabin family room has central heat and air and a new, comfortable queen-sized pull- out couch. There is a dining room featuring a Tomlinson Table, the design invented and patented by Laura’s great grandfather. The library has a twin fold out couch.

For dining, guests have a selection of china, from Hadley Pottery to Laura’s family heirlooms. The kitchen is well equipped, and a selection of farm-raised grains, beef , chicken and eggs is available for additional charge in the Crooked House which is conveniently located just outside the cabin. Laura's Mercantile CBD and Hemp products will also be available for purchase.

This is as fresh as it gets! The owners of the farm operate a Farm to Table restaurant and Distillery, called Wildcat Willy's in Downtown Winchester. You will be provided with discount cards for the restaurant upon arrival. We strongly encourage you to check out the rest of the Moonshine Trail and all that Clark County has to offer.

The property has two full baths, a laundry and mud room, and a three-season porch overlooking goat hollow.

Laura is an avid reader, and has filled two large bookcases with an eclectic selection of books. There is a smart TV with local channels and Netflix.

Just behind the cabin there is a granary, which is used to mill the heritage grains we grow ourselves.

The farm’s mistress, Laura, in 1985 founded a beef company that raised cattle with no antibiotics or growth hormones. Since then, she has continued on the path of better food and sustainable agriculture, her farm raising organic and non-gmo crops, heritage grains for distilling, beef and chicken. She has learned that it is best for her to greet guests and give them some direction regarding the large property. She insists that we are clear that this is a working farm, supporting 5 families, not a hobby farm.

The west section of the farm was part of Daniel Boone’s settlement and preemption, and in 1863 an African American community, Dry Ridge, was started on a piece of land contiguous with the farm, the land purchased by Moses Robinson, a “free man of color.” The cemetery remains, and Laura and others are working to preserve the history. Visitors are welcome to walk to Dry Ridge, which has particularly good birding.

The cabin consists of 2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a family room with fold-out queen-sized couch, a library with a fold-out twin couch, kitchen, laundry, pantry, dining room, mud room and three-season porch. The cabin is furnished with antique pieces that match the history of the cabin. It has a new air conditioning and heating system, both electric. Solar panels installed on the roof feed into the grid and offset electricity used.

Our farm is located just outside of Winchester. Our farm is surrounded by farms and makes for a private visit. We are located near Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge. If you visiting for Lexington, the farm is 40 minutes from Lexington and it’s a beautiful drive into the city through multiple horse farms.

Directions: We are 10 miles south east of Winchester, Kentucky. Take exit 96 off I-64, turn left on 1958, Veteran’s Parkway, turn left on highway 15, travel to Pilot View, turn left in front of the country store on 3368, and the T intersection, turn right. Go 1.2 miles to the Moonshine Trail sign, and follow the road as it takes a 90-degree right turn. Cabin is the first residence on the right.
