Lollipop Cottage is our family home–a beautiful Grade II listed brick and flint cob cottage built around 1700. It is in effect a 300-year-old cow shed (!), although it has been a house for the past 100 years. We have recently modernised it whilst retaining its rustic and 'quirky' charm. Set in rural Dorset, within Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lollipop is ideal for guests seeking a quiet retreat away from it all, or a great base for walking, cycling and exploring the area.

Помещението
I am passionate about wildlife and gardening, and our garden is organic and alive with birds and insects, hedgehogs and the odd squirrel. It's ideal for nature lovers, bird watchers, walkers and cyclists, or those who just want to laze around with a good book.

We are nestled in the Gussage Valley at the intersection of the Roman Road and the Dorset Cursus. This is an ancient chalk valley – inhabited for centuries due to the fertility of the soil and proximity to numerous streams and rivers, one of which runs through the Lollipop garden, rising in a spring just a field away. We often find old oyster shells – a sign of the Romans - and old clay pipes in the garden.

In its early days, what is now the kitchen, would have housed livestock and one of the farm hands would have climbed a ladder to sleep in the hayloft above the inglenook fireplace and bread oven.

There is a beautiful garden for your leisure and enjoyment, complete with patio tables and chairs and numerous rugs to enjoy the sunshine. If you venture out and about – there are many attractions in the surrounding area, including Shaftesbury, Wimborne, Wareham, the Jurassic Coast and the New Forest.

Достъп на гостите
You will have exclusive use of the entire cottage and designated parking and garden areas. I usually stay in a sectioned-off part of the garden adjacent to the cottage, but completely separate to the areas you will have access to, and I live a pretty quiet life! There is a shared lawn which I need to cross to get to my area and I also use the barn in front of the house, so you will see me and the odd visitor come and go. The stream is very shallow and dries up for some of the summer months. Children are welcome to play in it, build a dam and get wet and muddy, but we ask that parents keep an eye on them as we cannot take any responsibility for their safety. By prior arrangement, we can provide a locked space for bicycles. Unfortunately, we do not allow pets in the house.

Други неща за отбелязване
We welcome children but would like to stress that they must be supervised at all times in the part of the garden near the stream. Before booking, please be aware that the upstairs window ledges are low; there are stone floors throughout the ground floor, including at the bottom of the stairs; there is no stair gate. Other than that - it's a great place for kids to get close to nature, run around or even make a few mud pies! A high chair and cot are available on request, as is a babysitting service. Unfortunately, we do not allow pets in the house.

Gussage Saint Michael, England, Обединеното кралство

We are on the edge of Cranborne Chase – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The area is rich in history and the local farmland scattered with Neolithic, bronze age, iron age and Roman sites, burial mounds and tumuli. Knowlton Earthworks, Bokerley Dyke and Badbury Rings, to name a few, are only a short drive away.

There's a network of footpaths and bridleways for walking, and the local lanes are very quiet – perfect for cycling to one of our local pubs – the Museum Inn at Farnham, the King John at Tollard Royal, or venture further afield to the Langton Arms at Tarrant Monkton, the Talbot Inn at Berwick St John or to Cranborne where you will find the Inn at Cranborne and La Fosse.

For a special treat check out 10 Castle Street, Cranborne, a Grade II listed country house set in beautiful formal gardens and offering a fabulous restaurant, relaxed bar and terrace where you can just have a coffee, read the paper, enjoy afternoon tea, lunch or dinner. Also in Cranborne is the Cranborne Manor Garden Centre – with a great cafe. The manor house is open to the public on Wednesdays.

Dorset was of course home to the famous poet and novelist Thomas Hardy and Hardy's homes can be visited in Higher Bockhampton and Dorchester.

A trip to the medieval City of Salisbury is a must. The cathedral and Cathedral Close are wonderful to wander around and the cathedral houses one of the copies of the Magna Carta. The close also offers the Salisbury Museum, former Prime Minister – Ted Heath’s – house and Mompesson House, a National Trust property with a café. Tuesdays and Saturdays are market days.

I work freelance from home as a writer and editor. I am based on the south coast of England most of the year, where I rent out my family home - a 300-year-old brick and flint cottage in Dorset - through Airbnb. I am lucky enough to spend some UK winters in Australia and my family and I love the outdoors and are avid walkers, cyclists and kayakers. I enjoy meeting new people through Airbnb - both as a host and as a guest – and have found fabulous places to stay in Glasgow, New York, Reigate, Australia and New Zealand.

По време на престоя ви
I stay some of the time in a separate (sectioned off) part of the garden at Lollipop. You may see me and the odd visitor come and go, but your privacy will obviously be respected and I will leave you to enjoy your stay unless you need something. One of my lovely neighbours is available when I am not around, and one of us will be on-site to welcome you with keys, or we can leave keys in the key safe. A full welcome pack full of information will be available in the house, but if you have further questions or any problems arise you will be able to contact us by telephone.
