Green chile, sunsets, roadrunners and artists. New Mexico is known for a number of things and art is one of them. Almost 10% of the population works in something related to art or culture. Heck, you can hardly drive a mile without seeing an artistic expression of some kind. Galleries are abundant in New Mexico, but if you want to see the workspaces of some of New Mexico’s creatives, this is the tour for you.

Where we stop will depend on the artist’s availability, but we will visit artists with a variety of styles, mediums and studios. Learn what makes them tick, about their creative process and ask what it’s like to be an artist in New Mexico. As I take you to the studios, we’ll pass through a number of Albuquerque neighborhoods.

We’ll fuel our 3 hour tour with a stop in a scenic outdoor spot for a thermos of New Mexican roasted coffee and some biscochitos (traditional New Mexican cookies). I'm also a wildlife biologist, so I'd be happy to answer questions about the natural history of the area while we are together.

I fell in love with New Mexico when I moved here 17 years ago and a wellspring of artistic inspiration soon bubbled up soon! My own artwork led me to a job as the curator of art for a large medical facility. Now many of those artists are personal friends of mine and I get to peek behind the scenes in their studios and workspaces! There are good reasons so many artists live here...beautiful light, amazing landscapes, a rich history of art, a supportive art community. Let me introduce you to what makes this place artistically special.

Къде ще бъдете

On our tour, we will visit 2, possibly 3 artist studios. Depending on who is available, this could be anywhere in Albuquerque! Each studio is unique. Some are parts of homes, others are stand-alone workspaces. You will see various neighborhoods in Albuquerque as we pass between studios. Mid-way through our tour, we will stop in an outdoor area to enjoy a small snack. The outdoor stop could be on the bosque (river forest) or in the foothills.

Terry has a fantastic sense of what people resonate with. She puts much thought and effort into creating an amazing, personalized experience for her guests. I felt very comfortable and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The artists Terry selected for this experience were exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't have done this on my own. Thank you, Terry!

A very insightful and interesting afternoon meeting artists in their studios. We got to learn about materials, inspirations, and ways in which the artists see and critique their own work. Highly recommended!

This tour was the highlight of my New Mexico road trip. I've been telling anyone who will listen about it. It was only me and Terry on the trip so I got to monopolize her time. Terry had us meet in the lobby of the Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town which was close to my airbnb and very easy to find. I'd been dealing with some stomach issues on the trip and felt comfortable giving her a heads up that I might need a bathroom on short notice and she was very professional and accommodating about that. Luckily I didn't have any problems. Terry set up two artist studio tours that I would never have gotten to see otherwise. She knows a TON of local artists from her work as an art curator for the New Mexico Cancer Center. She answered a lot of the questions I had about ABQ and how the city is organized (Why are there farms and horses kept in the middle of the city? Who are the big employers? How do I move here?) on the ride to the first stop, a gallery co-worked by two artists. The gallery owner Susanna greeted me warmly and gave me the tour of their gallery and then showed me her amazing paper mâché work. She showed us how she makes the huge sculptures out of newspaper and wallpaper paste. Very inspiring. We had such a good connection that I ended up showing them the art that I do which is clay, most recently, mugs. Susanna and Terry both were extremely supportive and excited by my creative endeavors and even invited me to sell my work from the gallery and gave me details on how to set up an easy website to sell my work. Talk about a supportive artist community! Next came the coffee break in a nearby old town square surrounded by adobe buildings and a small church. Terry opened her trunk and got out a small table and set up a picnic for us with hot local New Mexican piñon coffee and biscochito cookies (when in New Mexico...). We stood and talked in the brisk air and bright sun about her background, the book she wrote on the connection between art and national parks, her work in revolutionizing how ecotourists book their travel - she is so interesting I wish I had a cocktail party to invite her to. Then we made our way to the second stop, a home studio of a ceramic artist Rick who also has a small vineyard on his property and is a retired army ballistics engineer. I learned so much about my own craft from Rick and took away from it many ideas for improving my process and tools. If I ever get to come back to ABQ for a longer stay I would definitely reach out to Rick for private lessons. I also enjoyed his stories about fighting the coyotes to keep out of his vineyard. Terry and I said goodbye back in Old Town in the parking lot of Hotel Albuquerque. I had such a good time that I promised to look her up when I return to the area.

Loved the tour! Great inside views of art and artist in the area and Terry is so knowledgable! She not only knows the art scene very well but is also fun to be around. We'll definitely take another tour with her next time we're in the area.
